Acid / Alkaline Balance

Another great measure of overall health is to measure the pH of your saliva and urine. This test will be good to do before and again after you complete the 7-Day Healthy Cleanse week.

pH Balance of the Body

Our bodies have a number of balancing systems. The pH level is one of the most critical for good health. The pH level is a measure of acidity or alkalinity. The pH ranges from 0 to 14. The lower the number, the more acidic, the higher the number, the more alkaline. The pH level of our body varies from one organ or system to the next, depending on the specific function of the body. pH of 7 is neutral.

For example, the stomach pH is much more acid than the intestinal pH because the stomach needs an acid environment (hydrochloric acid) to break down food for digestion. Whereas, the flora (good bacteria) of the intestine requires a more alkaline environment to assimilate and process the nutrients from the foods digested by the stomach.

Eating Affects Our pH Level

The average all-American diet consists of about 80% acid-forming foods! Processed and refined foods are extremely acidic to our systems, so our body creates a buffering system (a chemical process to protect the body from being harmed by the acids). This buffering activity establishes the bioterrain of the body.

Bioterrain of Our Bodies

The bioterrain is the internal environment in which all living things exist. A supportive bioterrain requires an optimal pH for good health. This optimal blood pH is 7.4, just slightly alkaline for our body to function at its best. At a slightly alkaline terrain, our bodies are able to ensure a good immune system. An acidic environment is supportive to unfriendly bacteria, fungus, yeast, cancer and viruses, whereas an alkaline bioterrain is supportive to friendly bacteria and a balanced physiology.

Generally, you should eat foods that cause a slight alkaline pH shift in your blood, urine, and saliva. To achieve an optimal blood pH, one would strive for a saliva pH of 7.3 - 8.0 and a urine pH of 6.4 - 6.8. This is necessary because your body is being literally bombarded with acids, both from the normal metabolism of your food (especially meats), as well as from external sources, such as environmental pollutants. Additionally, chronic stress, among other harmful things, overstimulates your sympathetic nervous system, which further magnifies this acidic shift in these body fluids.

Most forms of arthritis are associated with excess acidity. Acid in the body dissolves both teeth and bones. Whatever health situation you are faced with, you can monitor your progress toward a proper acid/alkaline balance by testing your saliva pH. It takes a minimum of 90 days for pH to change on a cellular level.
